Left Hand Blue -Episode #21

Left Hand Blue
Hometown: Andover, MA
Singing an original song called “Down”

*Carissa is on Bass and Back up Vocals
*Matt is Lead Vocalist and Guitarist
*Sean is the drummer

How did you get interested in music in the first place?
“We all had an appreciation for the retro music of yesteryear, which actually led us to find each other! We simply decided that since there aren’t very many bands our age playing this style of music anymore, we’d make our own and see what happened!”

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
“Our greatest accomplishment thus far, quite simply, is that we have stayed together and kept on playing our music. It can become quite frustrating being an underage band in a much older local rock scene, but we’ve stuck with it much to the credit of our family, friends, and town, and have kept playing even when the odds seem to stack up against us.”

What differentiates you from other musicians?
“Our sound. We are a no-frills band, and we draw many of our mannerisms from honest and diligent work ethics of bands such as the Clash or the Ramones. Our songs, however, feature abundant vocal harmonies, guitar flourishes, rhythmic changes, and staccato. It has proven extremely difficult to put us under a single genre.”

How would you describe your musical style?
“Our style is extremely eclectic – it is a combustable mixture of genres such as surf, punk, blues, folk, pop, rockabilly, and swing. In cohesion, these styles swirl together into “Left Hand Blue”, and glide along on top of a confidently driving bass and bombastic Ringo-esque drumming. Above all, we value honesty in our music, recorded or otherwise. We never record a track which we could not reproduce on stage in some form, and we write about that which is true to us, with very little fabrication.”

Who would you say has most inspired you?
“It is impossible for us to decide! We are musically inspired by our idols such as David “Honeyboy” Edwards, the Ramones, or Rush, yet each day we are inspired by our family, friends, and fans. Most of all, we inspire each other; we keep each other going when things get tough, and celebrate together when they’re great!”

“Church has played a major role in my interest in music and I’ve been hooked ever since.”

What kind of music do you enjoy best? Any favorite performers or favorite songs? And why do you like them?
“My first love is gospel music. My favorite gospel artist Karen Clark Sheard. I also love rock. U2 is my all time favorite. Each of these performers put their all on the stage thats what I love the most. ”

What would you like to be doing five years from now?
“I would love to write songs for celebrity vocalists and have a CD of my own. It’s my dream to one day sing on daytime television.”

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
“Going back to school has been my greatest accomplishment thus far. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and now is my time.”

How would you describe yourself to someone who does not know you?
“Funny, giving, devoted mother and a good listener.”

What is the most fun thing you have ever done?

How did you get interested in music in the first place?
“I started singing when I was young and from there it grew into a full fledged passion.”

How do you like to spend your free time? Do you have hobbies?
“I like spending the little free time I have with my friends and family and I love to cook and I recently started writing my own music!”

What is the most fun thing you have ever done?
“I would probably say singing at the Lincoln Center for performing Arts in New York City because it was such a different venue and I was the youngest person there so I got to show everyone that young adults can perform too!”

Who would you say has most inspired you?
“Probably my Vocal teacher, Teri Lafleur because she has been there for everything and has taught me so much!”

What kind(s) of music do you enjoy best? Any favorite performers or favorite songs?
“And why do you like them? I enjoy most types of music but I am somewhat biased towards jazz and indie pop because they are different and unique from other types of music.”

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
“I would probably say either singing at the Lincoln Center or singing in front of 5,000 plus people at the MassMutual Center.”
